Abstract: this article analyzes the statements from and about the body that Hispanic Caribbean women writers place against dominant myths about girls’ sexuality. Exploring the portraits of young girls and adolescents in works by several hispanic writers, I illustrate recurring motifs in half a century of representation of becoming women in the Caribbean. By laughing, screaming, crying or even committing suicide, the protagonists reveal the violence behind patriarcal fetishism, and the girls’ desire to live a body “of one’s own”.
